Le North American F-86 Sabre est le premier avion de chasse à réaction et ailes
en flèches construit par les États-Unis, juste après la Seconde Guerre
mondiale. Très réussi, cet appareil a été construit à 8740 exemplaires et
utilisé par une trentaine de pays différents. Son affrontement avec le MiG-15
pendant la guerre de Corée est un épisode célèbre de l'histoire du combat
aérien. J’ai eu la chance d’en voir un exemplaire au « Deutsche Museum
Flugwerft » dans la banlieu de Munich en Mai et cet machine a fière
allure. La version produite en plus grande quantité fut le F-86F, livré à
partir du printemps 1952. Au départ, il s'agissait simplement d'un F-86E avec
un réacteur environ 14 % plus puissant, permettant d'améliorer les performances
: sa vitesse maximale de 1 105 km/h et son plafond de plus de 17 000 m
changeaient la donne face aux Mig-15.
L’appareil est
doté d’un turboréacteur General Electric J47-GE-13 d’une poussée unitaire de
25kN et ses caractéristiques sont les suivantes : envergure 11,3 m,
longueur 11,4 m, hauteur 4,5, masse à vide 4 582 kg, avec armement 6 261 kg,
maximale 6 405 kg, vitesse maximale 1 085 km/h (Mach 0,89), plafond 15 000 m,
rayon d'action 530 km, armement interne 6 mitrailleuses de calibre 12,7 mm et
externe de 2 bombes de 454 kg, 8 roquettes de 127 mm ou 2 réservoirs de
carburant comme représenté sur la maquette.
The 1/32 scale model:
Possibly the most colourful sabre to
see combat in korea was (FU-897 51-2897) THE HUFF, flown by 1Lt James Thompson.
This is model I have choosen to represent. Thompson claimed two kills while
flying this aircraft, one of which was a MIG-15 that had a dragon painted down
the side. Thompson's crew chief then adorned the Sabre with artwork. THE HUFF
was assigned to the This aircraft also featured the titling Bill's Baby and this
unusual artwork on its starboard side, as well as six kill symbols.
Italeri’s model is the only one to my knowledge
at this scale and it is reasonably fine. The major difficulty though is the
irregular quality of the engraving. Excellent on the wings (with kind of a
stressed skin effect) and deteriorating as you move from the center part to the
edges of the fuselage (where left and right parts are glued together and where
the lines and rivets kind of disappear) and need to be carefully re-created.

The North American F-86 Sabre
(sometimes called the Sabrejet) was a transonic jet fighter aircraft. Produced
by North American Aviation, the Sabre is best known as America's first swept
wing fighter which could counter the similarly winged Soviet MiG-15 in
high-speed dogfights over the skies of the Korean War. Considered one of the
best and most important fighter aircraft in the Korean War, the F-86 is also
rated highly in comparison with fighters of other eras. Although it was
developed in the late 1940s and was outdated by the end of the 1950s, the Sabre
proved versatile and adaptable, and continued as a front-line fighter in
numerous air forces until the last active operational examples were retired by
the Bolivian Air Force in 1994.
Its success led to an extended
production run of more than 7,800 aircraft between 1949 and 1956, in the United
States, Japan and Italy. Variants were built in Canada and Australia. The
Canadair Sabre added another 1,815 airframes, and the significantly redesigned
CAC Sabre (sometimes known as the Avon Sabre or CAC CA-27), had a production
run of 112. It was by far the most-produced Western jet fighter, with total
production of all variants at 9,860 units.
